What are remainder books?
Traditionally, remainders are books that publishers make available at huge discounts to wholesalers for two general reasons:
- Titles have not been selling adequately to warrant the warehouse space.
- Publishers overprinted and are content to make their money back on the printing and in many cases, take a loss in exchange for the space and capital to produce better selling titles.
Publishers resell these titles to wholesalers for pennies on the dollar.
Our remainders philosophy
Hungry Mind does not generally buy remainders. Hungry Mind purchases titles returned from bookstores that are frequently bestsellers. We refer to these types of books as
in-print seconds. Retail book stores return many titles to the publisher and often, these books have never been put on the shelf. Why is this? Due to many publishers policies, in order for a book store to get their volume discount, they must purchase a minimum quantity of books. As part of that policy, bookstores have the right to return any unsold items for credit on their next order. So when titles come back to the publisher, Hungry Mind is able to purchase them and pass the savings on to you at 70% off.
